Loan rules

2. Users

The following are eligible to borrow items:

  • Members of the University of Seville (lecturers, students and administrative and support staff).

  • Members of centres and institutes affiliated with the University of Seville.

  • Accredited research staff and visiting lecturers.

  • Alumni of the University of Seville.

  • External users: residents of Seville and the surrounding province.

To register as a Library user, it is essential to hold a University virtual user account, except in the case of students at the EUSA Affiliated Centre and external users.

To use the loan service, members of the university community must present their university ID card, whilst external users must present their library ID card.

3. Protection of user data

Library staff may not provide users or organisations outside the University of Seville with personal information about individuals registered in the system.

Users have the right to review their own records. The information contained in these records is maintained by library staff, and any errors in the recorded information must be reported immediately to the Library.

4. Documents available for loan

The University Library’s collection, regardless of its location, is available for loan to the entire university community, with the following exceptions: reference works, journals, items from the Rare Books Collection, and any other items which, due to their specific characteristics or condition, are best consulted on the Library premises.

Users are responsible for returning the material in good condition. Any action that damages the library materials—such as marking, underlining, or tearing out pages—will result in a fine.

5. Loan terms and conditions

5.1 Loan periods and user categories. Loan periods vary depending on the type of user and the type of item. Annex I provides a summary table of loan periods by user type. Users have been grouped into the following categories:

This group is entitled to borrow all items permitted by the BUS.

  • Administrative and Support Staff: administrative and support staff of the University of Seville. This group is entitled to borrow all materials permitted by the BUS.

  • External users: those who are not members of the University of Seville community, who reside in the province of Seville and who do not meet any of the above requirements, are entitled to borrow all permitted items from the BUS.

5.2 Renewal. Renewals may be requested when wishing to extend the loan period, provided that the item has not been reserved by another user and that the user has not incurred any fines. A user may only request the renewal of a loaned item at the Library where the loan was originally taken out. This must be done prior to the return date.

5.3 Reservations. It is possible to reserve a borrowed item. Reservations may be made for titles of which there are multiple copies. Once the first copy is returned, the Library will notify the person who made the reservation so that they may come to collect it and borrow it.

5.4 Special loans. During the summer holidays, the return date for loans will be extended for a special period, which will be announced in good time. This type of loan cannot be renewed.

6. Breach of the rules

By registering their details in the University of Seville’s lending system, the user accepts the terms and conditions of the service, as well as the restrictions or penalties that may apply in the event of non-compliance.

6.1 In the event of late return. Anyone who borrows materials assumes responsibility for returning or renewing them within the specified period. Late return of materials will result in the suspension of borrowing privileges for two calendar days for each day of delay. In the case of same-day loans, this will be five calendar days for each day of delay.

If a user incurs 6 penalties during the same academic year, they will lose their borrowing rights for that academic year.

6.2 In the event of loss of the item. The loss of borrowed material must be reported immediately. The user shall be responsible for replacing it or, with the advice of library staff, acquiring another document or item on the same subject and/or with similar characteristics where the borrowed material is not available for sale. Until the material is returned, the user shall lose their borrowing rights.

6.3 In the event of damage to the item. The borrower must ensure the proper care of borrowed materials. Therefore, where it is clearly established that a document, object or piece of equipment has suffered serious damage during the loan period, the borrower must replace said material under the same conditions as those set out in the previous section.

6.4 In the event of theft of an item. If a person removes any material from a Library without having completed the prescribed formalities for its removal, they shall lose their borrowing rights and the management of the Centre where that person carries out their academic activities shall be informed so that appropriate measures may be taken.
