Turnitin

Turnitin: Anti-plagiarism software available to US lecturers

The Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, acquired by the Vice-Rectorate for Research and coordinated and managed by the University of Seville Library, is an effective tool for preventing and avoiding academic plagiarism. It is intended for academic staff at the University of Seville’s own centres (excluding pre-doctoral contracts or Research Staff in Training (PIF) contracts).

Turnitin offers a comprehensive system that helps improve students’ academic performance through two functions:

  • Similarity checking: this detects plagiarism by comparing a document against multiple information sources (the internet, scientific articles and its internal database). It also identifies non-original content translated from English. Turnitin provides teaching staff with an originality report indicating the document’s similarity percentage and displaying the original sources, making it an invaluable tool for assessment.

  • The programme also allows users to provide comments (feedback) and assess academic and research work.

Turnitin Draft Coach is an add-in for Microsoft Word Online that allows you to check citations and generate text similarity reports instantly without needing to be registered with Turnitin, which is particularly useful for students

It is available to the entire US university community in the online version of Word in Office 365. To use it, simply log in to Word Online using your institutional email address.
